There have been Hastings fishermen and fishmongers in our family since the 1800s, including such evocatively named local legends as Spreader Benton, Hardy Fullager, Dickie Gannon and Lizzie Rich. Our grandma Polly Gannon used to push a fish cart seven miles from Hastings to Bexhill and back again every day before our parents Albert & Lilly set up Rock-a-Nore Fisheries some 30 years ago.
Today, Rock-a-Nore Fisheries is still a family business, and Sonny's brother, sister and aunt all work in the shop - and Albert, now 79, still makes our delicious smoked chilli jelly. Trained as a chef in London's famous Brown's hotel during the war, Albert has always been a great experimenter with food - he invented our secret smoked salmon cure decades ago, and we've never changed it since.
