Gardening Our Streets is the first seed of the Hastings Garden Town programme to be sown in the town centre by local people! Transition Town Hastings is facilitating the project, generously made possible by a new grant from the Making It Happen programme.
If you haven’t already heard about it, Hastings Garden Town, aka Hastings “Town Centre Public Realm and Green Connections” (its official name), is one of seven programmes that make up the £25m Hastings Town Deal.
Gardening Our Streets is a community-led initiative to plant and tend a series of pop-up “parklets” and planters to show just what a difference some more green might make in our town centre. Inspired by Great Dixter’s world-famous philosophy of creative ecology, these colourful, biodiverse green spaces will help to encourage more bees, bugs and butterflies, provide much-needed shade, and hopefully, encourage more of us to stop and smell the roses!
If you’re interested in getting involved, drop by The Green Room at The Common Room any Thursday from 12–4pm – or the Transition Town stall at the monthly King’s Road market on Saturdays.
